Fire Protection Strainer

Like other strainers, United Brass Works’ strainers for fire protection applications filter liquids and gases, separating them from solid matter. Our strainers use stainless steel wire mesh screens to remove particulates from the piping system, preventing damage to critical components.

Why Straining is Important

When debris, such as scale, rust, and other matters, mixes with water, oil, gas, air, or steam and is allowed to flow through a pipeline, it can damage the line’s valve seats, shortening the valve’s life. Even more importantly, this could damage the equipment, causing it to malfunction. That’s why using the right strainer at the correct locations is critical. This will protect expensive downstream equipment.

Y-Type Strainers for Fire Protection Applications

At United Brass Works, we make Y-type strainers, which get their name from their Y-shaped configuration. These are used most frequently in pressurized lines, either water or air. A strainer is intended for applications where small amounts of solid particles are expected, and clean-out will be infrequent or difficult. If solids are flushed easily from the screen, and fluid can be diverted to the atmosphere, a blow-down valve on the drain port will allow for thorough cleaning without removing the screen and stopping the process flow.

Our strainers can be installed horizontally or vertically. Regardless of the installation, the screening element must be on the downside of the strainer body so that the entrapped material can be collected appropriately. This may sound obvious, but it’s often overlooked.

Ideally, a strainer is installed horizontally, but that is not always possible. If the flow is downwards, it can be installed in vertical pipelines, allowing debris to be naturally directed into the pocket.

Some manufacturers reduce the size of the strainer body to save material and reduce costs. Not United Brass Works. We’ll ensure our strainer valves are large enough to handle the flow in your project correctly.

Our strainer valves are bronze and brass, preferred for brackish, saline, and seawater service. Brass and bronze are best for potable water services. We offer several sizes – click here to find the size you need.
