Fire Protection Valves
Build the Best Fire Protection System With the Right Products
Fire protection valves are critical devices used in piping systems to prevent flammable liquids and gasses from coming into contact with heat sources during a fire or overheated system. When exposed to high temperatures, fire protection valves close to ensure a safe and reliable shut-off. They must be certified under the standards corresponding to Fire Tests.
These valves are crucial in firefighting systems for maintaining proper pressure, directing water flow, and shutting off the supply in emergencies. Critical components help firefighters manage water distribution, pressure, and direction.
The History of Valves for Fire Protection
Valves for fire protection include indicating control valves.
The insurance industry learned the value of indicating-type control valves the hard way through its losses. Automatic fire sprinkler systems were developed in the late 1800s to protect insured property from fire loss. These early sprinkler systems were merely piping with holes drilled into the pipe. Water was manually pumped into the pipes and squirted out the holes.
The development of the fusible link fire sprinkler permitted fire sprinkler systems to operate automatically when connected to a reliable water supply. Water could be kept in piping through valves without discharging and damaging the building or its contents.
A control or shut-off valve was installed between the sprinklers and the water supply to perform maintenance on these new automatic systems and permit them to be shut off in the event of a broken pipe. This valve was helpful, but unfortunately, it also allowed the water supply to be inadvertently turned off.
These closed valves started to appear as contributing factors to high-dollar loss fires. The solution that followed was the development of an “indicating” water supply control valve.
These indicating valves employ a rising stem or another clearly visible system to indicate when the valve is in the fully open position. Using these indicating valves in conjunction with a regular inspection program reduced damage by fire.
